ARTIST STATEMENT
For me, every painting is a body - built from wreckage after a storm, emerging as a changed and fantastic thing. Living a narrative interrupted by impact, imbalance and temporary illumination, I mix found imagery and materials to create anthropomorphic forms and internal spaces. Observational drawing is a key part of the work’s architecture, providing grounding in the chaos. Underpainting and hardware supplies help me treat paint as both skin and medium. I layer opaque and translucent paint, then with sanding, scraping and carving, reveal fiery forms.
With a process that alternates additive and subtractive paint applications, I travel back and forth between the structural base material of the painting (wood, paper, or canvas) and its top layer (paint). In this cycle, I think about what it is like to be both inside and outside of one’s body at the same time, and what it is like to travel between the two places.
